I have made it through the first round of interviews for jersey city public schools but now im on their active hire list...... Is this really going to happen or is this all a game Jersey City plays
I've seen alot of threads here lately about teachers worrying about finding a job. I thought that there was a shortage of teachers and they were desperately sought after. What's going on? Can somebody explain?

Usually science and math teachers (especially high school) are very sought after b/c of the limited amount of people who go for those jobs. Special Education is up there too not b/c there aren't enough people to do it, but b/c the burn out rate for teachers is so much higher.
I can't really explain but I can tell you a little of my personal exp. I changed careers and met the requirements to go the Alternate Route for elementary ed. That was getting me anywhere so I applied to a program to become a special ed. teacher in either Paterson, Newark or JC. I was accepted and I was slated to work in Newark along with about 4 other teachers. Up until the last minute, Newark never did what they needed to so that we could begin working for the district. Basically from what our program director said the HR Dept. just couldn't get their act together and they still had tons of openings...So Jersey City and Paterson both fought over us. I was supposed to work for JC but a family emergency interferred. When I was ready to begin working I decided Elizabeth was a little closer and I knew a friend of a friend...and that's how I got hired. Basically it came down to knowing someone. Now I love Elizabeth but I live in Toms River and would like to get a job within 30 minutes of here but I don't know anyone in any of the local districts and that seems to be the only way to get an interview.
So I don't see a desperation for teachers among hiring districts. Particularly for elementary ed. To the OP good luck. I liked everyone I met in the JC school district.
What subject/grade did you apply for? I've been a teacher in JC for the past 8 yrs. When I was hired I waited in anxiety all summer long for paperwork ect to be processed. I just had to "let go and let God..." and cross my fingers that it would all work out. It's the end of the school yr, so administrators are starting to figure out who will teach what where. I'm sure there are teachers who will not be rehired back and others who are burnt out and will resign, so don't give up hope. And come September, teachers are shuffled around again. There have been cuts to our Abbot funding, so the district has tightened their belt, but no teacher's jobs have been cut (as per our union president). Hang in there, it's a waiting game.
Good luck!
I have a BA in psych, i was going to do alt route but it was too much money and not covered by loans. I passed my CE test and the state is taking it's sweet old time getting me a copy of it so I can send out a resume. I am doing a MS in education this september in NY so I can have duel certification for Nj and Ny and at some point I am going to add special ed to the mix. You can't major in just special ed now it has to be both so it's more money I have to spend. As a male who is looking to and willingly going to teach children and special ed I should be able to get picked up rather quickly.

If you are willing to teach in a "more challenging" enviroment there are more opportunities. GL on getting a job in a nicer suburban district.
