I commute to Rutgers from Sayreville and I currently take Route 18 through East Brunswick to my parking spot on the Livingston campus (technically Piscataway, NJ). For my classes at 8:40, I leave at around 8 and the commute can sometimes take up to 40 minutes. It's absolutely horrid near the Turnpike entrance, so does anyone know of another route? I also have to drive home at 5:30 which means hitting rush hour again. By driving in this heavy traffic so much, I have actually become accustomed to which lane moves the fastest during each part of the commute lol. Everyone loves to move out of the lane that others are merging into, which leads to some dangerous driving maneuvers .

Unless they build another bridge over the Raritan, you are stuck with the long drive. You could try Rt 1 to Plainfield ave to Stelton rd but I doubt you will save any time. You still have to get past the Tpk.
Did you try rt 9 to I287 to Stelton rd?
When people tell you NJ is crowded they are not kidding.
Just one of the reason we relocated.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks for the suggestions, but going on Route 9 is completely out of my way. It's too roundabout of a method. Honestly, it's just 20 to 25 extra minutes in traffic so I don't mind it that much, but I thought there might be some secret side-streets that would bypass that one portion of Route 18 near the Turnpike. The only problem is Friday when I leave Rutgers at 5:20ish and have to get to my job in East Brunswick at 6. It cuts it really close.

Would it be any quicker to go through Ryders Lane into New Brunswick? I'm not sure how busy N.B. is at that time.

A friend I used to work with lived on Tices Lane out there, he since retired & moved to Arizona, but you might be able to take Ryders Lane to Tices Lane to NJ 18. That avoids that section of 18 by US1 but you would have to see what the traffic is like going that way.

Another alternative - take Rt. 18N to Milltown Rd. toward Milltown (it turns into Main St. in Milltown). Follow it through the middle of Milltown and you can either get on Rt. 1 North there or continue on Main to Georges Road which will take you to downtown N.B. where you can also pick up 18 again.

Milltown cops LOVE to catch speeders so go slow through town.

Old Bridge Tpk to Tices Lane (behind MidState Mall?) to Ryders Lane. Cross rt 1 to
get to George St in NB.You can pick up 18 off George St. You get on the service
road which merges back into regular 18.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest.
You'll save a substantial amount of time.

I go through South River and merge onto Route 18 after Tices Lane. I think I'll try the Milltown route tomorrow and see how it goes.

Yes. You stay on Tices Ln, cross 18 and then cross Ryders. Then it becomes Washington Ave in Milltown. Watch the speed limit or you'll get a ticket like another person here said. Then it ends at North Main St by the Hess, turn right at that light and you will come into North Brunswick where it becomes Milltown Rd, past Rt 1 and A&P. Milltown Rd ends in front of Little Caesars, you turn right at that light onto Georges Rd (Rt 171) which will bring you into New Brunswick, then it curves to the left and you make a right at the next light onto Commercial Ave, which leads out to Rt 18 and you are already north of Rt 1 so you are past the Turnpike mess already. This is what I would do coming from Sayreville.
