traffic is not nearly as bad as it has been in years past? This is typically the worst commuting time of year (Sept through Thanksgiving), and no way, no how has traffic been anything like the past few years. Even my husband, who rides Rt 80 for 40 miles, agrees. He had one commute that was about 75 minutes, but typically it's been about 50. Say what you want about gas prices, we're seeing a real difference in driving habits.

It'll be interesting to see statistics on accidents since gas spiked, but we'll probably have to wait a few months.

Thousands of layoffs on Wall Street will make it lighter also.

In the planning world traffic is measured in Vehicle Miles Traveled. VMT started falling when gas hit $2.50 a gallon.

Losing 100,000 jobs a month means fewer people are driving to work but people have also been shifting to transit in droves.

But don't think for a minute that it's not related. People spend more money on gas so they have less discretionary money to spend into the economy. People start driving less, gas prices come down a little.

The effect is a lot more pronounced in places where people have no choice but to drive everywhere. I don't own a car so, up until now, the whole thing has had little impact on me.

I drive on Parkway and also noticed it. Also the train I take is LITTLE less crowded. I don't see few regulars on the train now-a-days.

I saw it on 78 over the weekend. Less cars and they were driving much slower.

My commute is 50miles each way every day. GSP,78,24,287,80 and it used to take me 2 hours to get to work. This year im averaging about 80 min. On a good day I can get here in just under an hour. As long as there are no cops along the way.
