too many times i read on this forum how people dislike nj, think we're obnoxious, rude, etc.
let's show everyone that there are some awesome, kind, caring people here and share your story about a random, or not so random act of kindness you've done in recent months or weeks or days.
i'll go first
i work for a very upscale department store. an older gentleman (probably in his mid to late 70's) wearing a bright yellow coat with a parking logo on it stopped me and asked me where the mens room was. his nose was running from the cold and he looked like he was chilled to the bones. something about him just touched my heart. someone that age shouldn't have to be out in the freezing cold parking cars or directing cars all day. he should be home, cozy and content. i couldn't get him out of my mind all day so i went into my wallet, found all the money i had (which unfortunately was only $25, and took it out to him. gave it to him and thanked him for taking care of the customers and their cars.)
my co-workers laughed and said he probably worked to get away from home and keep busy but it still makes me feel for him when i see him out there all day.
so.... let's hear all the wonderful things you guys all do!
It was probably a financially foolhardy move, in light of the economy and the paycut I had to swallow this year (plus no Christmas bonus), but I am truly grateful to have a job (even though I hate it, hahaha), so I gave extra money to my charities this year.
Also, I was nice to all the tourists in midtown Manhattan yesterday after work when I was trying to get to the Port Authority to get home. Usually, I plow through them with a scowl.
One quick one, I came out of Shop rite yesterday and the salvation army santa was swinging his bell, I looked in my pocket for a 5 and I only had big bills. I threw a twenty spot in the can.
Many of you that I have a crazy commute and I'm a single mom. I don't have much money to donate and I leave home at 5:45am and get back home around 7pm because I'm working a second job. I work in an area where some kids don't have a Christmas. So I ran around collecting bags of stuffed animals to give to the kids. Sometimes not getting home until 8:30. This went on for about 2 weeks. What I found is that in my travels, others were very willing to go the extra mile and were collecting from friends and neighbors to help me out even though they'd never met me before.
I helped a very old man in Michaels yesterday that could harldy walk pick out a picture frame for his print. He was struggling so bad to find the right size!
I feel weird spewing my randon acts of kindness. A little embarassing & I like to keep these to myself. But since you asked.... about 2 weeks ago, I printed up a whole sheet of coupons for a local department store. My shopping friend asked me "WHAT are you going to do with all those coupons?" I smiled....heehehee.... I walked about the store looking into the shoppers carts, estimating that were making a large purchase and I handed them the coupon. Many were very suprised & grateful, one woman hugged me and another asked if I worked there. 2 days ago, at the Jackson Outlets, I was walking into a store as a woman was exiting. She had her sunglasses on and stepped off the curb - BOOM onto the pavement. I helped her up, asked her if she was hurt, offered to walk her to her car, picked up her bags. She seemed more embarassed than hurt. Poor thing. I know how that feels, I'm clumbsy too.
We couldn't do it this year - because money is just too tight. But I was talking to my DH about how upsetting it is to see the commercialism that continually builds up around christmas/holiday time. We would like to become santas, and fulfill the gift wishes for families who truly don't have enough. We don't have kids yet, but I think that is a tradition that I would like to start, to teach myi future kidlets that as nice as it is to receive, it's even more important to give, and to give with an open heart.
Each year since my children have grown take two names off the "make a wish" Christmas Tree at the local library for needy children and donated requested presents. Donated dog/cat food to the local animal shelter. Occasionally cook meals for an elderly widowed gentleman neighbor across my street. I compete in shooting competitions that gives frozen turkeys/hams as prizes and I donate some of those to their charity families. Have lost count how many Salvation Army buckets I have stuffed a dollar into this Christmas.
