My family and I are looking to move around the Jersey city area, I need honesty about whats bad and not. I have read everyones post in another thread and not sure where to go. My husband is an ironworker and would be out of the local in Jersey City. We would like to rent first and I am wondering about Weehawken, Fairview, Edgewater, Cliffside park. I like the city but need to have a good place to raise my children. ANY ANY input would be appreciated.

What is your monthly budget to spend on rent?
In JC and the surrounding towns, it is generally not safe in the areas that are cheap...
Yea this is what i was going to say. Bayonne has pretty good rent deals, on the safe side, and its school system is about average while JC's school are horrendous.
Another one i was going to say was Secaucus maybe.
Thanks. More detailed my husband is an ironworker so his union hall is the one in jersey city. I would love a short commute to manhatten etc. I need good public schools and at least a 3 bedroom rental of some sort with a renting price of $1500-$1800. Hopefully with some utilities included? But we'll see. I understand Newark and around that little area is not great. We are in MI. so it's qutie the same here. Detroit-BAD around it not good but 20 mins. from the bad is good. So I am very understanding. Any suggestions are great and very helpful
Has hubby checked with the local to see how busy they are? The workload in/around Jersey City has slowed quite a bit, so he may find himself riding the bench down at the hall for a while- especially as a newcomer. Many of the companies out there have their own "company guys" who have worked with them out of the local for years, and those guys get put to work first- they only call the hall when they're too busy, which isn't the case all that much right now.

bayonne (actually, newarkbomb made a good suggestion of secaucus too). if short commute to JC and Manhattan is #1, with decent schools and rent $1500 - $1800, these 2 fit the bill. you can absolutely, definitely get a 3 bdrm rental (in a 2 fam house) in that price range in bayonne (utilities *may* be included too). be warned though - it's urban...not NYC urban, but houses close together and a lot of ppl. on the upside your driving to get things (groceries, etc) will be minimal to none.
here's an example of a rental in your price range:
Come on now Jersey Girl - Didn't you mean to say "freakin' Bayonne"
