Single guy moving soon to Montvale NJ where I'll be working for 8-12 months.
I am wondering where to live and look for apartment to rent, thinking of studio or 1bd possibly furnished. Any tips about neighbourhood with not steep pricing NJ is famous for. my budget is around 1k-1400.

Not only will you find it nearly impossible to find a place near Montvale for that price, but your problem is compounded by the fact that you're only staying 6-8 months. Most places require a 1 year lease and again, are considerably more than $1200 a month. You should probably reconsider taking that job.

Pearl River, NY, has 1BR apts in your price range, usually in a 2 family. Pearl River is right over the border from Montvale. You might find a 1 BR in a 2 family in Westwood, NJ, at the top of your range. Bergenfield, NJ, and Dumont, NJ, will have apts in your price range. Depending on where you work, Bergenfield could take 25 minutes at rush hour.

Bergenfield, Dumont and New Milford are definitely affordable, but further out. 25 minutes in good traffic. I would actually LOVE to have a 25 minute commute!
Pearl River is nice, but I doubt there are many rentals there. It's definitely worth a look as well as Westwood.
The rental market in your price range is very thin in Montvale right now, but occasionally 1 bedroom apartments for $1400-$1450 come on the market in the Ridgemont Gardens complex on Rolling Ridge Road. Is a garden style, condo complex.
Are there any extended stay hotels in the budget up there?
