Hello Everyone,

I am in 2 minds about deciding on a townhome which backs out into a cemetery property. There is a small patch of woods (~75 feet maybe) separating the backyard from the cemetery which is moderately visible from the basement walkout during Summer. During fall and winter I am sure that the visibility will be pretty high. What are your thoughts on such a townhouse? Should I take it forward? Will resale be a problem? Will it influence prices? Please help me think through this.

Thanks in advance.

It's probably already affected the sales price that you're paying, since it's already there- its not like you bought 2 years ago and they just built the cemetary last month. You'll sell for less than if it wasn't there, but you're also paying less, so it's a wash.

Cemeteries are the greatest places to play spotlight at night. Consider it a nearby amusement park.

If the townhouse is in a smaller town or suburban area I don't necessarily see it as a problem. In cities, cemeteries attract the homeless, vandals, drug related activity. If the crime rate is generally low, you shouldn't have a problem. In a dicey urban area I'd stay away from it.

I wouldn't refuse to buy a house because it was near a burial ground, though some would.

GOOD point..there is a cemetary in North Bergen I believe that was taken over by homeless illegals
The druggies & such love those crypts/mauseoleums to break into & hang out
So very good point

I think it depends where too (type of town) Also, I would want to make sure there was a discount versus similar houses without a graveyard.

Personally, a graveyard wouldn't bother me at all as long as the price was right. It's interesting, cemetaries were originally built as parks where the idea was that your family could walk through and visit you on a Sunday and have a picnic lunch. Now we're so scared of death. Anyhoo.

It's not the dead people that will hurt you, it's the ones that are still alive

My mother always said "It's not the dead you have to be afraid of, it's the living".

Well your mother has clearly never had to hold off a swarm of zombies with just a chainsaw and a shotgun before then.
