DH is getting transferred to Summit and we dont know the area at all except that it is expensive. Can anyone give us some towns with good schools and within 30 minutes of Summit where we could buy a house in the $500,000 to $550,000 range? Are we dreaming or is it possible?

You might find something in Bridgewater, Green Brook, parts of Watchung and Warren for 500k but they won't be in upscale neighborhoods or they won't have all the amenities that so many want today. You could go out a little further to Branchburg and find something nicer in your price range but some don't consider Branchburg schools all that great. You could definitely find something in Hillsborough in your price range but now you are stretching your thirty minute commute.
You might find housing in Union county in your price range but to be honest I know nothing of Union county. I do know some people like Berkely Hights but I don't know what you can get for 500K+
Good luck

I suggest Cranford. You can't go wrong, and everyone very friendly.

I would also recommend Cranford. Excellent Schools. Good central location and close to Summit.

It only takes me 10 or 15 minutes to get to Overlook Hospital from Livingston. We have great schools and houses in your price range.

Well have you tried Summit yet? You can find something in your price range. You might have to fix it up a bit but you should try. Also Mountainside, Scotchplains, Cranford and Fanwood.
