Couple of questions for you before I start making suggestions.

1) Do you have a family?

2) If no to #1, are you seeking a partner?

3) Do you want/prefer to use mass transit as opposed to your car?

4) When you say "decent" what does that mean to you in terms of
proximity to shopping (walking vs. driving),
type of town/city center, and
activities/entertainment?

5) What type of recreation activities are you looking to do?

The "Questions for potential and future residents" in the Philadelphia forum is very useful, and should be made sticky on this forum as well:

Please provide a link to a single house in downtown Jersey City for sale for under $300k. I looked on Trulia and couldn't find one. That's probably because they don't exist.

a) Edison is hardly a "crappy town". It's not Millburn, but it's not a bad place for what you get for your money.

b) $250k within 45 minutes of NYC is a tall order, and isn't going to land the OP in the creme-de-la-creme towns in NJ- if those are the limitations, the pickin's are going to be slim and only so-so.
