I want to move from AZ. Ive lived here over 20 yrs and am so tired of the politics and work environment.
I have some questions though and would really appreciate it if anyone can give me info.
First of all, how is the economy in Santa Fe vs Albuquerque? I have experience in many types of work but mainly working with disabled/mentally ill people as a Behavioral health Tech. Also, is NM an "At Will" work state?
Which areas of the two cities are decent but inexpensive? (To rent)
As far as weather, when does it start getting colder and does it snow often?
These are most of my major concerns. I used to live in Las Cruces back in like 95 for about 6 months. Ive been through Alb and SF but never stayed. Im generally pretty optimistic and can find a job relatively quickly,
I want to stay in the southwest, but I would like a city that has a little more change of season. (We do not even own winter coats!)lol
I'm a moderate democrat, have kids ,am bi lingual (eng/span)
Any info would be great! Thanks.

Employment in New Mexico remains "at will."

Please read the definition and circumstances if you don't understand it:
State Bar of New Mexico - Employer Rights and Obligations (http://www.nmbar.org/Public/publicpubs/employerrightsandobligtations.html - broken link)

I didn't say I do not understand what "at will" means....
I asked if NM is a state that practices it..

So I guess you did answer that question so thanks.

Weather-wise, anywhere in NM would probably be more to your liking. I'm in Las Cruces and while it still warms up to near 90 late afternoon, it has started cooling off to around 60 at night.
Some of the trees do change color here, usually early November by me. And we certainly are wearing coats at night by Christmas-time. We even had a little snow early December last year.

Politically, I'd say you'd be able to find like-minded folks in most of the larger cities and certainly in LC, ABQ and Santa Fe.

I cannot speak to the work situation specifically, however, there does seems to be a growing need for those types of localized services particularly among young people, retirees and returning veterans. Health care is a burgeoning industry here in LC.

I just moved here from Portland, OR, in May, 2010. It rained (and thundered!) a lot more than I expected in summer, but there were a lot of nice bright clear days in the upper 90's. My coworkers tell me that it does get cold enough to snow in the winter, but it's not all that much. The spring is windy with dust storms and I caught the tail end of that. I guess there is some sort of change of season here, but brownish to full brown doesn't count when you've seen places like the Northeast in Autumn.

I'm sure Albuquerque could oblige your political taste. And I'm quite sure there are enough mentally-ill people to work with here.

I don't understand why you don't own winter coats. I have lived in Tempe for 32 years and since it gets below freezing about 6 times per year I use my winter coat many times per year.

Yes it does get below freezing in Phoenix in the winter (many times each year).

If you can afford the housing and find a decent job, it sounds like Santa Fe would be a pretty good fit, but Albuquerque might as well.

Albuquerque has more mild weather, with snow a couple of times a year, generally not lasing more that a day or so, but I will add, coats are not worn all that much there either. Yes, more than in Phoenix for sure, but you will see more jackets than coats. Of course the summers are much cooler than Phoenix because of the high altitude.

Being bi-lingual will help, so will being a moderate democrat: you will find much of Santa Fe very liberal.

Probably you need to visit a few times, do research on the net for jobs and go from there.

Nita

For climate, this is hard to beat:

New Mexico

Funny that many seem to think that a "moderate democrat" would be most at home in Santa Fe. I'd probably be a liberal libertarian anarchist atheist and I get along just fine in the most conservative area of the state.

Ive bought winter coats for my kids they do not wear them...just sweat jackets. Or they would "lose"them ...
I do own a coat but its not very heavy...and I only wear it a few times a year.
And thanks for everyone's input
