I was thinking about taking a day trip on bike from Santa Fe to Taos, but I've driven between the two quite a bit and I wouldn't want to take the highway from SF to Española because it's too fast and there's no room to bike.
Road bike yes? If so, look up the Taos High Road. It's a Scenic byway that goes from Pojoaque, through Chimayo, Truchas, Penasco and a bunch of other little villages and dumps you out at Ranchos de Taos. It's all quiet roads, unceasing hills, and extremely scenic. The best way to get to Pojoaque is to leave Santa Fe up Bishops Lodge Rd. which goes up through Tesuque. There is a section from Tesuque through to Pojoaque where you have to ride the frontage road, but at least its downhill
