We're meet old friends in Chama for a day of hiking or, if necessary, snowshoeing since it is equal distant between our homes.

I see there is Sargent Wildlife Area accessed on the north side of town off of Pine Avenue. Can anyone tell me about that trail?

We're meeting next weekend. I thought we could meet at Fina's Diner for breakfast, hike & then have late lunch somewhere. Any recommendations for a Saturday lunch in Chama?

Here I'm back with a trip report.

Sargent Wildlife Center is absolutely amazing- a lot of snow, panoramic mountain views & we were blessed with a warm, very sunny day.

There is a snowmachine trail & there was actually a guy there grooming the second trail for skiing, dragging welded bedsprings behind his snowmachine & then cutting ski track with another tool, so we were able to snowshoe, hike & ski.

I had forgotten that the red rock canyons just north of Abiquiu are one of the most beautiful spots in the state. Such a nice drive up & back to Chama.

Wish my husband and I could go. We always enter from the Pine side. There is a house for sale where all you have to do is jump your fence and you have the whole Sargent Wildlife Center as you back yard. I could really handle that lifestyle.

Chama is a very beautiful area of the state. I can see why you love it so, debbie. We ate breakfast at Fina's & good lattes & treats at Boxcar. Saw some pretty victorian houses for sale. I want to go back to Sargent when the elk are there in the summer- must be something to see that many of them in that awesome backdrop.

Does anyone know the 2 weeks the reserve (Edward Sargent's Wildlife) is closed before Elk Season? I am thinking in Sept. and we were going to do the long hike this Sept. I can't seem to get the information on the internet.

I'm not aware of it closing for 2 weeks before hunting season. It does close in May and June.

Quote:
Closures-Access is restricted on the Sargent during elk calving May 15-June 30 and to non-hunters (except hunter’s guests) during elk hunts.

Unit 4 which Sargent is part of starts in the beginning of Oct. I would call NM Game and Wildlife just to be sure. I don't think they allow deer hunting in the Sargent area. But, call just to be sure.
