I am only a casual observer to the New Mexico forum. My wife and I would love to own a home in the state. I have no idea on how the problems stack up or how any of them should be resolved. I am learning from each of you. Here are some points though that I may be able to make.
Government is not the best creator of jobs. Government can create an atmosphere where companies will want to build within a given financial structure. I just don't see how increasing the minimum wage will help build a larger pool of employment opportunities within the state. I don't have the statistics in front of me but I have read that just the opposite happens.
Government is very good at causing problems within the jobs sector. Higher taxes, increased regulation, other factors can weigh in on if a company wants to increase jobs in any area. If those factors have a minimal effect on a given business then no problem. I doubt that raising the minimum wage will have too much effect on the those making $50,000 or more a year. Then again it could. Things have a way or trickling up when it comes to incomes. People just can not see a Mc Donalds employee making $15 an hour when they are making $16 an hour. I would bet that those people just at and above the $15 mark would want more. If they are worth $15 then I must be worth $30, and on and on.
Business does create jobs. Opportunites are offered from the business sector. These are the people that you want to take care of. You want to do all that you can to make sure that the business owner is catered to. Right now as we speak Burger King is working on merging with a Canadian Company. They plan on moving to Canada. The reason is that they get a better deal in Canada then they do in the USA. That amazes me. It turns out that many Socialistic nations are offering a better deal than we are getting here in the USA. Other companies have done the same as Burger King and many more will follow. Sure that is a National issue but it does show what can happen when the screws are too tight.
What I would want in a Govenor is someone that is going to work to change the employment situation by making it more favorable to run a business in New Mexico. Give tax incentives. Do what ever it takes. Who ever runs the state has to be pro business.

But the latest unemployment numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show work is getting harder and harder to find in our state."

Being I'm living in my third state and having seen a number of gubernatorial elections, this years NM governors race seems to have a lot of indifference, more so than I've ever seen. I'd say its a recipe for a shoe in victory for the incumbent. I also blame the lack of a serious competitive contender to address Susana's lack of effective leadership along with Koch Brothers/Super Pac money coming in from out of state, Gary King's chances look pretty grim.
Rogarven, can you say why Susanna Martinez has been a better Governor of New Mexico than Bill Richardson's job as Governor? I am just a semi-interested newcomer to New Mexico. I and my wife and our two cats and two dogs arrived in Alamogordo in Jan. 2013. I'd like to hear your reason (s) why she has been a better Governor. Thank you!
When I hear Susana on TV commercials talking about how King would "take us back" to the days of Bill Richardson, I shout "YES!!!". At least he brought jobs to the state. Susana has no jobs plan, and never has. This has been a disaster for the New Mexico economy. I am seeing more and more "For Sale" signs in my neighborhood. Not good!
Ouch and a gaping big hole for an explanation why she has led this way. Is it because she doesn't know how to attract Tesla Motor factories, or similar big-ticket item companies?

People receiving Government benefits SHOULD contribute some work in return for support and I would wager that most Americans agree.
I like Martinez and as a Republican she is business friendly and opposed to excessive tax/regulation.
Like another poster said, Government is not a panacea for all the ills of Mankind.

Yet New Mexico has fallen to the bottom of the nation in child welfare and economic growth. And she surrounds herself with children in her commercials-- as if she didn't cut programs like SNAP to help families in need. I do not see any evidence that she has even tried to reverse the situation. Something has to change.
