Got an aquaintance whose take on his current gig was ~"I credit my employment to the fact that I was looking for long-term stable employment in a city where everybody else wanted out."
And I can't figure it out -- I haven't been to Socorro for a long time (like 20 years now), but it seemed like a nice little place. Anybody tell me what's going on?
(my bud's on vacation, so he's not avail to spill beans for me, and now the curiosity bug has me).
I've always thought it seemed OK too. But it's really small, and pretty poor, and probably isolated enough that you'd feel it while still being close enough to Albuquerque that escaping to the big city seems like a viable option that wouldn't disrupt your life too much. I know at least a couple people who work at the Very Large Array (a good 45 minutes west of Socorro) who still live in Albuquerque, probably because they found Socorro's charms lacking. I also wonder about the "town & gown" politics there...it's the home of what's probably New Mexico's highest-regarded public college, but there's little in the way of a visible student presence or college vibe in the main part of town. I wonder if people associated with New Mexico Tech feel comfortable in Socorro, or if there's some antipathy there...
As small towns in NM go, Socorro is one of the nicer ones, particularly for the southern half of NM.
It does have a number of small town problems, including those you might expect from a number of locals who don't work for a living. I've known restaurant managers who said there wasn't a single employee in that town worth a damn.
Still, I'd take Socorro in a heartbeat over Belen, T or C, Artesia, Deming, or Clovis. Albuquerque's a little over an hour away, and if you're in the NMT orbit, there's plenty to keep you busy. There is NO traffic, and a bunch of big-city amenities even bigger towns don't have.

We have been to Socorro a few times over the years. Never stayed overnight. It's about 90 miles south from where we live. Here are the four largest threads on Socorro:
