Hello,

We're going to be in Alamogordo for an evening, and I'm looking for recommendations for good, fresh NEW Mexican food. (No tex-mex please. I'm from TX and I can cook my own tex-mex).

Thanks!!

Well.......I lived in Alamo from 2007 to 2011, and it got to the point that the only places I would eat were the chains--and one local restaurant, Pepper's Grill, at 3200 N White Sands Blvd. I've never seen a place that had such uniformly lousy, lousy restaurants.

Maybe someone who has lived there more recently can help you out.

Would probably have to be Tia Lupes on White Sands.

Tia Lupe's is OK, as are Margo's and La Hacienda, but they fall somewhere between Tex-Mex and whatever NM food is. They're just all basically sort of mediocre.

Casa de Suenos in Tularosa was once very good--and had a menu that spanned both. But the last couple of times I ate there were not good. It can vary wildly, but when it's good--it's GOOD.

The Western in Cloudcroft isn't bad either.
Casa De Suenos would have been my pick a few years back. Not so much anymore.

I wonder what happened to Casa? I had some of the best food in the area there the first couple of times I ate there--and the last ones were just outright lousy.

Wasn't Western one of the places that was burned out in the fire?

If so, I'm glad they are still there. The food was very good the last time (probably early 2007) I ate there.

Si Senor still does a big lunch business but it too is only mediocre and more TexMex. It's my personal belief that ALL restaurants in the region - not just in Alamo - began their downhill slide with the advent of pre-packaged food service deliveries, which are now the norm in the restaurant business. It's akin to buying frozen TV dinners, IMO. Casa de Suenas does a fair lunch business, but I too dislike it now.

The best restaurant in the area remains Rebecca's at The Lodge in Cloudcroft, and I'm including eateries in both Ruidoso and Las Cruces when I say that.
