Our search continues for a property in northern New Mexico. We've seen a few places in the Anton Chico/Tocolotito/Villanueva area, but can't find out much about that area. Has anyone here spent any time in this area, or lived there? Any insights are appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for the reply. No, I'm not hispanic... I was aware of there being many land grant areas in NM, but didn't realize this was problematic in relation to 'outsiders'. Your observation leads me to wonder about land grant areas vs houses I'm looking at there. Do you know any way I can find out more about land grant territories? For instance, I'm also looking at a place in Regina. Now I'm wondering if it's in a land grant area...Thanks again.
I have been through Regina, just in sightseeing, going to Santa Fe National Forrest or Abiquiu Reservoir. Regina is in Sandoval County. I don't know how you research the land grants. I would probably ask a few real estate agents in the area and ask the county clerk.

I spent only about an hour and a half in that area, taking a side route to Denver Colorado on the way. The best adjective was 'clannish'. Though I was only there a short time, it was quite memorable. It's one of the most impoverished areas I've ever seen. I am thinking Villaneuva specifically, then further down Rt 3, San Miguel and Ribera.

Mike 0421 is right. I go through there a few times a year as it is easier to visit my friends in the Edgewood/Moriarty area than I-25 to I-40. It's like going back in time 200 years (without the cars, of course).
Thanks all, for the replies. Yes, as uggabugga says, that seems to be a beautiful area. But we have no interest in stepping on anyone's toes, so we'll look elsewhere.
We want to be in a rural area (in that we farm/have animals), but I guess one often comes up against the 'old ways' (and old old mindsets) in those areas. I can't blame them though, because there has been so much rampant development in so many places. And outsiders often mean 'change' to the oldtimers, although that is furthest from our minds.
desertdenizen, have you looked into the area north of las vegas around rociada and ledoux? and- are you looking for something close to the general tecolotito/anton chico area?
uggabugga, we're not set on the Anton Chico area. I would say that's area is at both the eastern and southern boundary of where we're looking.
I'm looking at north of Taos now, but think I'd better start a new thread on that, since it's a completely different area.
Thanks for your input!
