Just reading another thread about the Hipsters in New Orleans being a unique breed...and a geographer termed them "hyper-locals".

Would love to hear more about the "hyper-locals", what kinds of things they get involved into....that give them such a term. Examples, please, as well...

Looking forward to hearing about them.

This should be interesting. I can't explain them, they are like Orleanians who happen to be like hipsters, IMO.

The idea is that people come down and immerse themselves in the culture to become true New Orleanians.

That begs the next question, "What is a true New Orleanian"? Perhaps that is being defined, as we speak, but those immersing themselves in those roles?

What exactly do they do, to become a true New Orleanian?

Not really. Most define it as a native or somebody who grew up here, but a lot of twenty-somethings move down here, adopt the culture, and trumpet it to everybody they meet. That's what Campanella means.

In a nutshell, folks who moved here post Katrina, are not from here, but have made it their business to become "experts" on our culture, up to and including lecturing natives about said culture. In short a bunch of outsiders (largely suburban white kids from up north old the PNW) who think they are experts about New Orleans after having lived here for 2-4 years.

Pretty much. They try to fit New Orleans into their idea of what a model American city should be, and then throw a fit when it doesn't work. The sad thing is, they miss out on the most interesting parts of the culture because they're too busy throwing themselves into local traditions that have no use for them.
