Greetings, I am planning a trip through the south over Thanksgiving and our stop in NOLA would include Thanksgiving day. Is anything going to be open or does the city shut down on Thanksgiving? Specifically would there still be tours going on? Would there be restaurants open? Please let me know. Thanks!

The city doesn't shut down on Thanksgiving. There will be restaurants open. You may be able to find tours but not entirely sure about that. Thanksgiving weekend is Bayou Classic weekend, so there'll be tourists in town during that week for the game.

That explains why we can't find a hotel on Saturday night! Thanks for the info. So far we are coming up empty on things to do.

If your visit is beyond Thanksgiving into the weekend, I would avoid the French Quarter. It will be chaotic with college kids from Bayou Classic.

Personally, I would recommend another time to visit NOLA.

Thanksgiving is Bayou Classic time, a football game between Grambling and Southern.

Lafayette would be better. the Lafayette restaurants spec the big one downtown will have big Thanksgiving dinners. And you might get invited to a crab fest by some locals. Nothing happensspecial for Thanksgiving in New Orleans

Is Lafayette a big destination for Thanksgiving? I've only spent a little time there, and it seems like a great little city, but I would think there would be much more to see and do in New Orleans for tourists passing through.

We have amazing parks here, and they're always open. The top ones are Audubon Park (my favorite) and City Park, where you can enjoy beignets and cafe au lait on Morning Call's patio.

^ I miss Morning Call. Great place to grab coffee and beignets and enjoy the park view. I always recommend tourists to go there instead of the tourist trap Cafe Du Monde.

Thanks everyone, we have adjusted our schedule so that we are there prior to Thanksgiving and will leave Thanksgiving morning.
