Hi everyone,

I are taking my first trip to New Orleans this weekend. I've been reading up on some of the online reviews of French Quarter- is it still as dangerous as the media and others portray it to be? I'm getting very uneasy after readnig all that I have read. We will be staying in the French Quarter Friday night...

I have never considered the French Quarter dangerous. It's a heavily touristed area and is well patrolled. Where are you getting your news?

Personally, I'd be more afraid of Dallas (yes, I've been there quite a bit). The crime being reported is all in areas of the city that no tourist would go to, nor are you likely to be a target. It's mostly drug related and domestic violence out in some undesirable areas of town. While you do need to be street smart and not wander down dark side streets, the tourist areas are very safe with a large police presence on Bourbon Street late in the day into the night. It's not Disneyland, there are criminals out there but you find that in ANY big city.

I haven't lived here long at all, and I haven't been in the Quarter as much as others, but I'd say it's very safe. I come from a farm in the middle of nowhere rural Missouri...basically I'm not a city person...but I didn't feel a bit uneasy walking around alone in the French Quarter. As with anywhere, be smart, don't be flashing cash or expensive items, but by all means relax, have a good time, and tell us all how you liked it after you get home!

I too have never considered the FQ dangerous. As said before you need to be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Stay in well lighted areas at night and with another person or group if possible. I have walked all over the Quarter and have never had a problem. Of course, that doesn't mean I won't get mugged on my next visit. But I could also get mugged walking through the park here in Huntsville AL as well. Please do not let the opinions of others prevent you from seeing and enjoying NOLA for the wonderful city it is.
