Hi There,

I am looking ( like so many others) to move to the great NYC!
My boyfriend has secured a job there and is making the move in the next few weeks.
I am hoping to join him and make NYC our home for a few years.

I am an Irish brand manager in a FMCG company with over 4 years marketing experience looking for a similar role in the New York area.

One tiny catch I do not have a visa so I will need the company to sponsor me.
To be honest I know nothing on the visa requirements, can I get a visa before I leave and look for a job in New York or should I hand tight and wait to get a job before I make the move.

I am currently employed here in Ireland so don't want to just give that up if the hopes of a job are pretty slim in NY.

Would appreciate any nuggets of info such as employment agencies that I could go to or any info you have on visa's etc.

Thanks all!

Personally I think you have a better chance coming in as a student and attempting to stay once you're here. US immigration is tricky, even if you're coming from a developed nation and are considered "low risk" for settling illegally. With the economy, getting a job is tight and getting a job to justify sponsoring you (you usually have to be HIGHLY skilled) will not be easy. Think about it: NY has 2 of the top B schools in the world, and a few decent 2nd tiers. This city is swarming with people who can do your job, still looking for work.

I'm not saying don't try, but competition is thick. I don't think the type of info you need will come from city data. Here is the immigration support website. Find out how you would classify and what you need to do to get in:

Or you could always pay someone to marry you temporarily and look for a job when you get here. But for a company to go through the stress of helping you immigrate when there are tons of folks that will cause them less paper shoveling, you need to be SPECTACULAR.
