I'm usually so careful about this, but I responded to an ad for an apartment on craigslist. The poster responded to me with what seemed like reasonable questions for a future landlord to ask (name, age, profession, current address, phone number, and some other questions about living habits). Like an idiot, I sent him the information. He then informed me that he wanted me to take the apartment, and I needed to wire the money to him in Africa. At which point I realized that it was a scam, and said that I wasn't interested anymore.

But now I'm scared that he's going to show up at my apartment or something like that. I've received a phone call from the number that he had listed, which I didn't answer, and he didn't leave a voicemail. Should I be concerned about any of this? Has anyone else out there made this same mistake?

Thanks.

Honestly, unless you gave out a credit card or social security number I think you are ok. The only thing I would worry about is him maybe coming to your house? But you could tell your neighbors to look out.

Scams are a dime a dozen and they usually move on quickly to the next when they arent getting what they want

If he's in Africa I don't think he's going to show up. The scam is to get you to wire money and nothing else, as far as I know.

yeah, I'm worried about him coming to the apartment. but he said he's in Nigeria, and his phone number was included in the e-mail, and the country code for that phone number is Nigeria's. that number called my cell phone earlier today, and I didn't answer. so it seems like all evidence points to him being in Africa, and just trying to get money. but the possibility of him showing up at my apartment still scares me.

It's the "I chop your dollar" scam music video.

Just try to relax. Just because the guy called your phone doesn't mean he's coming over here.

The only thing that guy is interested in is your bank account. The guy is not about to set foot in the U.S. and make himself open to our fraud laws.

What I would do is send him an email, stating that you have realized that this is a scam and you have forwarded of all his emails to the F.B.I.

just send him a response with a link to a known malicious website. There's a website that lists all known malware and their website.

let him have his identity stolen by other crooks
