Need to drive/stay in NYC between Christmas & New Year midweek (12/26 - 12/29) in the area of the West Village around Christopher Street. I've been told that that in this area it might be a little easier to find on street parking than other areas uptown. Wondering if anyone familiar with that area could offer any advice as to what to look for and what to avoid?

The real thing to avoid is bringing a car into Manhattan.

Yellow cabs, Uber Drivers, MTA bus will eat you alive in Manhattan. I wouldn’t recommend driving in Manhattan also parking rates are very high

Whoever told you that was lying. This is the best advice:

I see you live Upstate. If you live near a MetroNorth line you’d be much better off doing that instead of driving. If you live farther Upstate then maybe you can drive down and find parking near a MetroNorth line.

If you really insist on having your car nearby, the easiest thing to would probably be to find a place to park somewhere in New Jersey by the PATH train (NJ subway system) which you can take to Christopher Street in Manhattan. If you really need your car in Manhattan for some reason, then all I have to say is: good luck!

Ignore half to three-quarters of the immediate responses. Their automatic and instant response to anyone driving into Manhattan is "NO, NO, NO, Don't Do It".

That being said much of the area between Seventh Avenue and West Side Highway/West Street are small side streets with often limited if not confusing parking (thanks to Alternate Side Street cleaning rules). Also again because the streets are so narrow often one or both sides of a start in whole are part do not allow parking for various reasons, such as to give emergency vehicles access.

You can use websites like Parkopedia to find free street and other parking: https://en.parkopedia.com/parking/me...g=201712210830

Basically here is a small low down:

Usually you can park on the avenues (6th, 7th, 8th, etc...) from 7PM until 7AM without paying a meter. However you have to check if the spot is in a no standing or parking zone otherwise (see signs posted). During daytime hours you'd have to feed the meter and there is a limit to how long you can remain in any one spot (in theory).

If you find parking on one of the side streets chances are good for one or two days of your stay you'll have to move the car for street cleaning. Many just sit inside the vehicle and wait for the street cleaner to go by, then at 1030AM or whenever the expiration time get out of their vehicle and go about their day. If you are in the vehicle either NYPD (usually parking enforcement) may tell you to "move" or the street sweeper will honk his horn and force same. Either way usually driving around the block or double parking across the street (if possible) will suffice, then go back to aforementioned spot.

If all this seems like too much bother you can do what other out of town drivers; simply park your vehicle and accept the one or two tickets (they are only $55) as a cost of "finding" street parking for day or week. Long as you pay the ticket or tickets nothing further will happen. Believe it or not it actually cost less that way than even one night in a parking garage.

I know people who drive into the WV almost daily and find parking.

Sounds like you can do it---especially if you have specified time to be anywhere.

That being said, you need to pay attention to the street signs---lots of regulations around there like Bugsy said.

Chelsea and West Village are crazy with signs because so much was or still is commercial/manufacturing zones. Thus you have plenty of truck parking signs where you cannot even stand during the day without a commercial plate and pay the "commercial" meter.

Years ago so much of Chelsea and West Village had tons of open parking lots. Ditto for Tribeca and SoHo, not to mention all those lots along the piers. Mostly all gone now, all replaced by new development, mostly luxury housing.
