So yesterday I see a large, spacious, very clean apartment at a very nice price. It really is a good deal compared to other places I have seen. So I decided to put in an application on it. The realtor I am working with told me upfront that his fee is one month's rent, which is very reasonable. So I put my application in on the apartment and we find out that no one else has put an application in on it yet. I come home happy. Last night I was perusing Craigslist and saw that three other brokers had advertised this same apartment (no joke) and all were claiming it was a "no fee" apartment. So it dawns on me that my broker is going to make a killing off of deal as he clearly did not tell me this is a "no fee" apartment (meaning the building is paying him, and he will also get my fee). I plan on calling him first thing in the morning today to discuss this with him, as I feel I am being screwed over. Any advice about this situation?

Well,it clearly wasn't/isn't a "no fee" apartment for you since the broker made it quite clear he was charging and you agreed to pay, a fee.
You should always tell brokers that you only want to look at no fee apartments.Once you agree to look at "fee" apartments you are agreeing to a fee for their services.
You are not really being "screwed over" when you agree in advance to the terms and cost of getting screwed.You sort of screwed yourself more than you are getting screwed over.

I had told him upfront that my preference was a no-fee apartment and he responded that they were really rare. It really pisses me off that he is basically lying to me about this one.

You have to be firmer and clearer than stating your " preference " .You have to say "no fee only" or "only apartments where the fee is paid by the landlord".
If they think you are a good prospect and you get up and start to walk away, they will suddenly come up with the no fee apartments.
If it makes you feel any better,this is an extremely common occurrence.Many,many people pay fees on apartment rentals when they don't have to.Most of them never even realize they screwed themselves.

How do you know the other brokers aren't lying about it being no fee? You know, the old bait and switch?
