Greetings everyone,
looking for a little neighborhood specific input.
i'm coming up with my girlfriend next week and wanted to take her to the old neighborhood to show her the old block and what not.
Talking bed stuy here, decatur st near saratoga park.
the place was pretty dodgy when i was there in the early-mid 90's but from what im told has cleaned up a bit since then yet thankfully avoided gentrification somehow.
I was always fine there and got along really well with most around the nabe but just checking as if the place is still the same i wouldn't want to risk her safety.
so, anyone familiar with that area?
thanks in advance,
A
If you grew up in the area then you should really not have a problem. It is MUCH better than a decade ago. However, since you asked about safety and the "G" word gentrification, the areas that have done a complete 180 from the 90s are on the western border of Clinton Hill (Nostrand to Classon). That area is in full gentrification swing. Also the areas around Lewis Ave (south of Putnam (maybe Gates) & north of Fulton) have seen significant change. The eastern sections haven't experienced the same amount of change but on the whole, I think would be safer than what you remember in the 90s. My point is that overall, crime has improved A LOT in NYC so this means that even the worst of the worst areas are not as bad as they once were.
Also, since you'll be in the area, I'd recommend you try one of the popular restaurants on Lewis Ave. Peaches (b/t Decatur and MacDonough) has an AMAZING brunch.
awesome!
thanks jad2k.
ive heard of that place, maybe well take the J out on Sunday morning and have a walk then Peaches for brunch.
Sunday morning always was the quietest and most peaceful time around there.
