Since no one mentioned it yet...Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn are both worth checking out. Rents have gone up a bit, but I managed to find a JR 1 bed in Brooklyn Heights two years ago for 1600/mo

If I were you, I'd be looking at apts going for no more than $1,500, which basically puts you outside of Manhattan.

Maybe once, your wife starts working and you have a double income H/H you can move into Manhattan, if that's what you really want to do.

I agree. Right now, my husband and I make far less than you but our combined income is more than yours. I would not be looking for apartments anywhere near 2K. I think topping off at $1,500-$1,600 for a one-bedroom should be your max, especially because you do not know how long it will take your wife to find a job. And if you're new to the city, and from what it sounds like you want to actually be able to DO things, I would focus on spending less on rent and more on having fun.

Commuting is not a big deal. As long as you're near a decent train, it's easy to get anywhere. If I were you, I would focus on areas people usually bring up in Queens/Brooklyn and once you're actually living here for awhile and have your wife's income, it'll be easier to decide where you want to move and the price you'd like to pay.
