Can anyone recommend a reputable cat shelter in Brooklyn or Manhattan, with well taken care of cats. Thanks.

Are you looking to adopt or surrender a cat?

For adoption:

CACC, Brooklyn or NYC.

You should look here as well:

If you want a rescue, post again and I will make recommendations. If you adopt from the city shelter, though, you will be quite literally saving his/her life.

For surrendering, there are few safe options.

Default Adopt

I am looking to adopt a kitten/young adult. My only reservation is that i have relatively young kids, and I want a safe pet, one that does not have behavioral issues. How would i spot that? Any cat lovers out there who can give me some advice. Thank you.

This one is good.

As for the behavioral thing, honestly if your adopting a kitten you won't really know, it's kinda gamble. Some of these cats have been traumatized by their experiences out in the street. It's just like humans. If your getting a street rescue kitten your probably better off pairing the kitten up with another kitten so they grow up together and have better social development. If your really concerned about that may want to look into adopting an older cat (a young adult like you said) who has a formed personality already.

Go to Petfinder.com.

You can filter by location, type of pet and age and restrictions.

If you want a baby you may have to wait a bit. I don't think it's kitten season yet. I agree ith NooYowkur. If you're getting kittens you may want 2. Most shelters try to adopt out 2 at a time so they have companions and they don't want to split up siblings.

How old are your children? You may want a cat that is a year old or maybe older who has been around children. Shelters and Petfinder.com will always indicate if a pet is child-friendly.

Kittens are VERY playful and can be little terrors lol...If this is your first pet I would suggest maybe an older cat that is used to children.

Also, keep in the mind that our pets choose US. If you can, bring your kids with you and let the cat/kitten come to you. Don't be discouraged by shy or scared cats/kittens. Just be patient with them
