RP is affluent and safe, but often congested: the busy Queens shopping mall is 1/2 mile down Queens Blvd, while Rego Park Center, a mini-mall, brings in lots of vehicular traffic. You don't want a car in RP, and if you do own one, you will spend lots of time parking it unless your building has an underground parking garage. Use the subway and/or buses, one reason RP has always been a desirable place: nice amenities and good public transportation. RP now is a strongly Russian Jewish neighborhood, with a smaller population of Kazakh Jews, Bakharian (Uzbek) Jews, Georgian Jews, and other immigrants from the same republics of the ex-USSR. The culture is very different -- not at all polite or cordial by American standards. Read: post-Soviet brusque and occasionally boorish. Many of these legal immigrants are on food stamps, even though they have money, new homes/co-ops, and good incomes. Everybody I know in RP (the American old-timers) mentions it, and bitterly. Bottom line: RP is an ethnic enclave, so you should be ready for that. It IS like Brighton Beach in some respects, though it doesn't feel as isolated or as rough around the edges. If you find a good rent deal in RP, go for it. If not, you might prefer nearby: Forest Hills (on an express subway line, but generally more expensive than RP) or Kew Gardens (about the same rents as RP but farther from Manhattan). Good luck.

Are You Russian? I love it when Americans describe all different type of "russians". Too funny. By the way I lived in Rego Park on 62nd dr for about 2 months when I 1st came to the US. That was in 1989. Even then I think I was the only person there who spoke Russian without an accent. There are no Russian Jews living in that area nowadays. Its all Bukharians

There is no such nation in the nature. Kazakhs and Jews are two different nations, like Mexicans and Irish.
