Living in Queens, working uptown. Do those in the know consider the 30 day card de rigeur? Or is the Seven Day card more reasonable? Or pay as you go?
How do you guys fund your subway rides?
Thank you in advance.
If you are going to use public transportation on the weekends, it's best to get an unlimited 30 day. If you only use the train to commute to work, and that's it, you can save a few bucks by buying the amount of rides needed.

If you don't feel you can do the math due to not knowing how many times you will use the subway, then buy yourself a $50 pay per ride, use it as if it's unlimited (don't avoid taking the subway to keep your costs down) and then see how long it lasts you. That should give you the info you need to make the decision for the next one.
If you only commute to and from work, it makes sense to pay cash. However, I take the Subway much more often if I have an unlimited card. I would be reluctant to pay $2.50 to take a ride for two stops, but I don’t have to worry about it if I have an unlimited card. It’s especially useful in the winter.
As said above if you only commute back and fore to work 5 days a week then go with the pay-per-ride card. If you make round-trips on the subway or bus at least 6 days a week go with the weekly card. If you ride every day round-trip then it is worth getting the monthly unlimited card.
I use the card to commute to and from work, but also might go places during or after work which is more swipes. I also am usually in at least 3 boroughs on the weekends, so for me the 30 day card is the most worthwhile.
You need to figure out how many days in the month you'll be riding. Also take into account holidays and vacation days, times when you have alternate modes of transportation, etc.. Sometimes the unlimited makes sense, other times I just reload $19.05 at a time and it works out to be cheaper
Also take into account how much you travel when your not at work..whether its food shopping, traveling with friends, family etc...
And if you have an unlimited the more you're going to spend, because you figure it's a free ride to get back on so you hop off everywhere to shop. The MTA/city are idiots for not making the unlimited cards more affordable. It would really help the economy because free transportation = more spending

I agree.
The reason is because MTA/city don't want to favor the upper middle class. There was some study that claimed higher income are the buyers of 30 day card.
