My wife and I both work in Manhattan (me at Bway and 50th, her at Columbia 116th st). We currently live in Springfield NJ. We are considering a move to NYC for an easier commute.

We are considering Brooklyn and Queens. We have 2 children, so we would like 3 beds 2 bath. Purchasing seems impossible, so we would consider renting. A backyard would be nice, as would a parking space. Budget is 4k per month.

Are there any neighborhoods that fit the bill? What about schools (kids are in K and 1st). Is private school my only real option?

Thanks for the suggestions. There are actually quite a bit of options in my price range in Forest Hills, and close to subway entrances.

What is that area like? Is it treelined streets with mostly houses, or is it a bit more urban with a mix of houses, businesses and apartment buildings? What about the schools?

Mix of both, actually. Schools are good.

Forest Hills is way too far from Manhattan. You would be better off finding a house in Astoria or Sunnyside to rent, 4K is a really good budget

No it's not. You have both the express train and the LIRR. Plus it's schools are far better and it is the safest neighborhood in the city.

Bayside. LIRR service is the best bet to get to Manhattan, though more costly than a Metrocard/
