Hey I wanted to start off saying I am not trying to offend anyone and I am of Puerto Rican descent myself. However I have heard more than once about how politicians brought blacks and Puerto Ricans into New York City by offering them welfare. Is this true or is this a myth? I cannot find any information on the internet with the exception of I think one or two posts I found here on cd. I know that Blacks and Puerto Ricans arrived to New York City to find factory jobs at around the same time when these jobs were starting to disappear but I don't know if them being enticed by welfare is true or not.

It is myth. Black people and Puerto Ricans came here to find work and better themselves -- same as everybody else. But you're right that as the blue-collar jobs fell sharply, many found themselves out of work, marginalized, and sometimes they went in welfare, left the city, or at least, hopefullymanaged to make sure their kids were educated for white-collar work.

And there have also always been black and PR people who were educated before they came here and managed to do OK.

Black people were in NYC in abundance 'way back in the early to mid-1800s.

But I believe there were also big migrations in the 1920s and again in the 1950s.

Democrats like to buy votes by giving such people free stuff. It's called the Welfare State. Once you accept these free things, the democrat party has you under control as they have created a life-long democrat voter. A huge disservice to this demographic as the majority of these people will forever be stuck in the same socioeconomic environment.

Democrats like to "give a man fish" while Republicans prefer to "teach a man to fish".

Besides how can these people vote against Santa Clause (the democrat party)?

Really ?! Because I always had the sense that they were inclined to steal any fish that were not nailed down, so to speak. Big old fish grab. I could be wrong, of course.

And don't you support Trump ...? Because I think there are stories about Trump's own brand of fish stealing-type activities and such.

Says the Hillary and Bernie Sanders supporter.

No more Democrats for the love of God. Look what you have done to NY, California, Detroit, and Chicago.

You instill terrible morals in people with your "social programs."

You have taught people to vote for the candidate who can provide them with benefits instead of voting for the greater good of all Americans. You have tried to make criminals into the victims, and cops the enemy. You have attempted to squash 1st amendment rights by telling everyone that doesn't agree with you that they're racists, homophobes, etc. I don't consider myself a republican at all, just an independent. But liberal policies need to GO before it destroys this country further. I could never, in a million years vote for another democratic candidate unless he was extremely moderate every again. It goes against all common sense, reason, and logic to continue to vote for liberal policies that hurts the middle class (what's left of it).

if you think we can continue down this road of liberal policies, you have no foresight whatsoever. They are unAmerican values you are installing into the minds of people in this country.

I care about 4 things:

1) Getting REAL (private sector) jobs back in this country
2) Getting people who mooch off the system to stop milking the taxpayer (sorry but giving other people money is not equality)
3) stop getting government involved in every little thing ( LIMITED GOVERNMENT is a primary tradition American value)
4) Honoring the Constitution

I know liberals in my daily life who will ask me why conservatives are against "any and all firearm restrictions."

A) Nobody trusts liberals. You give a little now, and they come back in a few months and want even more restrictions.
B) 90 million Americans own firearms own guns, and guess what? They don't shoot anyone!!
C) Criminals don't follow laws

Harlem Resident, please read up on the founding fathers and educate yourself. You need some serious enlightenment. Good night and God Bless America

You would think politics would be a huge topic around the "welfare" dinner table but it's not.
