Hello all,
I like to browse the different city threads on here and was just wondering what is the minimum that people should make to be able to live in NYC and still afford to have some fun? I'm assuming no car payments but replace that with the metro cost (still not as expensive as a car) and with no student loans and minimal credit card debt? I'm thinking within the next couple of years of moving there from the city I live in now because I want to live in some different places in the U.S. before settling down. I would be living with 2 to 4 other people as well (2 being with my hubbs and the 4 being another couple in a 2 bedroom place). What are some other hidden expenses? I have a dog as well. Thanks for the insight.
Cocktail prices are outrageous particularly at speakeasies and any place that uses the word "craft" before the word "cocktail". $15 - $18 or more. Some days its almost enough to make a person want to drink house liquor, but I carry on.
Inner city neighborhood with roommates or relatives 40k should be the minimum. Way out in the outer boroughs maybe 32k or 35k should do alright. In Manhattan and gentry areas of West Brooklyn and Queens the minimum to live in these places is around a 100k and all you get is a shoe box apartment.
Minimum's are, of course, super relative. I made it through 4 years of college on roughly 15k a year. Of course that included sharing a 3bdrm in Jamaica with 3 other guys (i.e. 4 people in 3 bedrooms) and lots of instant ramen. I feel like I could have survived on a little less than that.
