Reason: Race is not part of the proposed criteria for admission
Whenever you start messing with competitive testing, it's wrong. It's the dumbing down of elite institutions. I'm calling it like I see it.
Doesn't have to be the way you are fearing.Absolutely not a single one of the top couple of hundred colleges and universities base their admissions solely on any test. They all use many factors other than test scores in their admissions criteria. That includes all of the Ivy League schools and none of them have lost their "elite" status because of it.

Not saying UCLA is on par with the Ivy's but Asians are being targeted at that school's admission policies. i understand what your saying but this is a way to circumvent merit based testing. You can spin it all you want. Some smart kid will not get admittance based on social engineering.

Right but where do we draw the line ? If smartness is the only criteria you think should be used maybe we should just end it all with the IQ tests. That we we could immediately weed out anyone with an IQ of under 130 and let them know when they are in the 8th grade to forget about college and not to bother wasting their time. Maybe the IQ should be used for everything including job applications. It would certainly make life simpler for everyone.

This could work but then they would need admissions committees just like they do for colleges. The process would still be very competitive and perhaps a lot less transparent since they won't be using just 1 test score. The lack of transparency is probably the biggest risk. Actually I don't know why attendance is relevant if all the other criteria like grades and test scores are considered. Perhaps you're a genius who doesn't need to attend school everyday and still excel.

Bluedog, This is now the problem with civil service tests. Black candidates can't pass the written tests so they make the tests subjective. When does political correctness end? No one is saying to tell an 8th grader college is out. maybe that 8th grader just can't go to Bx Science. Maybe that 8th grader is going to another school. I guess your a fan of everyone getting a trophy

I thought that was what those high schools were about, that is to accept the most academically gifted students and doesn't require students to know how to play ball, BS, dance. If smartness shouldn't be a factor then why don't we do away with exams altogether and implement equal pay across all industries. While we're at it lets just have the gov't send us checks so that we can all just sit at home and ponder about how a policy of equal outcomes have benefitted us all.
Why don't they just keep the exam, and put in additional requirements to weed out those that only focus on the exam. Say min of 90 percentile on all state exams plus 90 average and up on all subjects.
