How far ahead (months, years, a decade, etc) is NYC when compared to the rest of the country in terms of culture and fashion? Is it ahead at all? Why or why not?

I would say that New York City is very far ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to the fashion industry, post-war/contemporary art and literature. A good case could be made that it is the capital of the world in these fields.

We are not ahead in any forms of arts anymore mainly due to artist not being able to devote time to their crafts: fashion, music, art, because rents are so high they need to have multiple jobs to maintain a roof over their heads. Back in the 70/80/90's it was much easier for people to live off working a few hrs and still have a decent place and time to work around their art.

Does this include boroughs other than Manhattan?

Clearly you do not have fashion sense to ask a question like this. I work in the fashion industry and it shows me that you haven't traveled enough to see. One thing that is noticeable while working here is the vast majority of employers who left their home city because of the lack of fashion the city/people had.

You can't promote fashion in a city like Dover, Delaware. You just can't.
