It seems like NYC has this huge reputation for having horrible landlords that take advantage of tenants at every turn.

So far, every landlord I've had in NYC (2 in the past, and 1 more current) have actually been pretty good. Since I've been here I've had a bunch of unfortunate life situations that caused me to have to break lease early on every apartment I've lived in.

The first time the landlord took my deposit but we agreed in writing that I would not be liable for any remaining months of missing rent due to vacancy. He was very understanding and the whole process was respectful and cordial.

The second landlord was a big surprise. We had a bed bug infestation in the apartment, followed by financial trauma. Because a new tenant was moving in soon, I had to move out in a hurry and I did not have time to patch the holes in the walls from nails. We also destroyed half of the door frame to the bathroom in an accident. I repaired part of it but we could not find a replacement trim. To my complete surprise and utter amazement a few months later we got a check in the mail for a refund of the entire security deposit.

What has been your experience? Mostly good? Mostly bad? Average?

I'd stay away from AZ Realty, First Service Residential, and Bronx Pro are all unresponsive for some reason. Sometimes one will call with a simple question, but they do not answer for some reason.
