Okay this is not me trying to be cheap so I don't want it to seem I am just trying to save a couple of bucks...

In Los Angeles the tipping norm is $1 per drink regardless of it being a beer or cocktail. I went to a bar yesterday in town (actually 3 of them...all the same top of place with drinks all the same price) and the tip was not optional. There was an "included gratuity" automatically added to the bill once I got it along with a mandatory charge of being in a party of 3 or more despite me not even knowing the people who I shared a table with. Are charges like this the norm? This was not an exclusive place or anything.

Every bar I go to, I tip 1 dollar per drink and it's always optional

I never go to upscale places, though

These are not the norm for 1 person.

It wouldn't surprise me if charges are built in for larger groups, but I'd expect them to start for groups larger than 3 (my guess would be 6). Can't say I've heard of places adding in a gratuity and a 'charge for party size > x.'

My sense is a gratuity of $1/drink is a little low for a mixed drink or at a more upscale lounge. At a bar or other place that's not fancy, $2/drink might be OK. At an upscale lounge, $3/drink would be more appropriate.

I'm pretty sure a 1 dollar tip is acceptable at a dive bar.

I say this as someone who almost always tips 20% on food

Thanks guys =) I guess I'm a bad tipper then. I do 20% on food (unless the service was terrible). I've just always been told the norm generally is $1 per drink and maybe sometimes $2 per drink.

Thanks guys. Management said the norm in NYC is to tip 20% on drinks as well and that an extra charge for parties of 3 or more is the norm.... I felt that was a bit strange. This wasn't some amazing high end place either. Hipster yes though lol.

If I'm alone I'll give no more than an approximation of 10%, especially if I'm at a bar. And if I ask for water I always give $1. Groups are one thing, but 20% in all cases is exorbitant.

20% tipping is the norm all around NYC. Otherwise the workers can't afford to live/commute in NY.

What do you mean you didn't know the people you shared the table with? Like friends of a friend?

Well, if someone got a beer for $5, giving $1 would be 20%. Though being out at night usually means beer is more like $6-$7. Still, they'd only be getting a $1 from me---it's not like I'm asking them to make me a drink.

I've never been at a place that has an extra charge with three parties or more. Doesn't sound like a place I would go to anyway and I wouldn't consider that the norm.
