Generally I want to hear some stories of how you moved to New York. Not there yet but have plans to move to New York. I notice that New York is somewhat of an international state being so many cultures/lifestyles are there and come from all over the world to see this beautiful city.
Literally, 2010 by CTS Cadillac driven about 850 miles then in 2014 via Southwest Airlines to LGA.
But figuratively, in 2010 I attended NYU and stayed in the dorms. In 2014 I snagged my friends place in an overcrowded 1bd in Downtown Brooklyn where I only payed $600/mo. Got a job within a month and moved to SoHo to split a 2bd. The next step will be to get my own place because living on my own has spoiled me for the last two years.
It's scary I'm sure from the outside, but it's not that bad. I'd say if you don't have some sort of connection, it's going to rely on either you having a job (because landlords for the most part won't rent to you if you don't) or relying on a roommate situation where you don't really know the person beforehand.
I started contacting recruiters for jobs online and took a few trips up to interview for jobs. Once I got a job I started looking for apartments and luckily my employer payed for moving expenses.
My father was born in Harlem (as was his mother) and my mother moved to NYC when she was in the 3rd grade. So my family has been in NYC for quite some time, excluding a 1 year stint out of state where I was born (I've been here since before I turned 1 y/o though).
