I am looking for an area from which to commute to Fordham 's Rose Hill campus. I'd love to live in the city, but I'm not sure its affordable. Three children, my wife is a stay at home mom at least for then next couple years.

Any thoughts?

You're looking at $1000-$1200 a month in rent for 3 bedrooms. I don't think you can find that at all in metro New York outside of Section 8 or public housing or an affordable housing lottery. Even in the tough Bronx neighborhoods you couldn't find it. You might have a few options, however, if you can make a 2 bedroom work. But even then I'd guess the pickins are slim to non existant

Is that $50K your total income or is it the amount you can pay for housing?

Wouldn't the cost of childcare essentially balance out her income?

For the record, I'm ok with a commute of an hour. Maybe a little longer. I have no pretensions of living in Manhattan.
