newkirk avenue and ocean is the beginning of the historic district with the big mansions and stuff on the avenue. The side streets are still mostly single family home, the corners are mostly buildings.
Towards nostrand and flatbush it really begins to get thuggish. Although id say its pretty much the same as it has been for years. obviously the hood aint as rough as it was back in the 80s and 90s, but its still mostly black, lower class mixed with middle class. Still lots of good shopping on flatbush avenue. Great jamaican food too. Theres not alot of the the "tear down a single family house to put up a 6 family condo" thats been permeating brooklyn and queens though.

how long ago did u leave?

Unfortunately it doesn't cover much more than the Flatbush Avenue corner for now, but you can check it out on Google maps. Go to maps.google.com and in the box type: 1258 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn, NY

That will be Flatbush and Newkirk. You can click on "street view" on the top of the map, and Flatbush Av. will be lit up in blue. Then click in the middle of the blue street near that intersection. A picture of the corner of Flatbush and Newkirk will pop up and you can drag the cursor on the picture to spin it around and see in all directions.

Maybe in a few months they will have more uploaded. For now you can't see much in outer Brooklyn but you can see almost any address in Park Slope.
