1. Mets
2. Jets
3. Islanders
4. Rangers
5. Giants
6. Yanks

In the order of current strength.

Mets are the best positioned right now because they have the pieces to become a post season team.

The Jets have a good defense and solid receivers to make any QB look good.

Islanders have solid team and leadership which helped them get to round 2 of the playoffs.

Rangers lost a lot of power losing key position but they could get back with new signings.

Giants aren't gonna get any better unless they improve their front line and defense.

And lastly the Yanks just suck, old, overpaid, and underperformed in all areas. They overspent on relief pitching but they are getting smacked around so their closers can't be used at all.

Football gets most ratings probably for a few reasons. It's usually on weekends and it's on regular tv. It's very easy for casual folks to watch it too. You know just get a couple beers on a weekend and watch it, also helps its a winter sport. But native new yorkers are most passionate about baseball, basketball, then hockey before NFL. If the Jets ever win one in my lifetime the city will go crazy though.

I would say in terms of respect its:

Yankees
Giants
Rangers
Knicks
Mets
Jets
Islanders
Nets

In terms of overall popularity:

Yankees
Giants
Jets
Knicks
Mets
Rangers
Nets
Islanders

The Yankees will be very good again in a couple of years. My bet would be on Islanders being next local team to win a championship. They are an imposing big fast hockey team.

Don't quite buy Mets winning it all this year. I think a few teams are better, also not sold long term on their hitting just yet.

The buzz around the Yankees just isn't the same. I remember a time where Yankees playoff baseball shut down the city in the fall. Even when they made the ALCS IN 2012 it was like "eh". Even The rivalry with the Red Sox isn't the same either

And don't forget about the fantasy sports/gambling aspect of football over other sports. There are also a lot fewer football games than baseball games, so each game is more important.

Don't get your hopes up for the Yanks. They have big contracts to clear out after 2017. The rebuilding can't even start until 2018 when they have cash freed up. It took the Mets 5 years of sucking to gain enough chips to rejuvenate their pitching corps. Free Agency no longer buys championships as the Dodgers have continued to fail.

The best teams are the ones that have home grown talent such as the Cubs, Mets. The Yanks traded all their young players away and not terrible enough to draft top picks.

They won't be relevant until atleast 18'-20' then 85% of their current roster will likely be gone by then.
