I work full time in NYC, the typical 9 to 5, and want to find part time work in the service industry (nightclub or bar) here. Usually I spend weekends going out spending money in these environments but I rather be making money than spending money being in the kind of environment I generally like.

How tough would it be to even get an opportunity to do that?

Get up and walk around to various bars, restaurants, clubs, etc.. and ask if they are hiring PT staff. This and or seek out the various employment agencies that provide temporary help to catering, event and other such situations wanted.

Larger hotels and restaurants are likely to be union, so you'd have to go through them to get any sort of work. But many of the newer hotels are non-union shops so you might find success there.

Keep in mind many places offer current staff chances to work OT first over new hires. So your choices again might be limited.

It really depends on what sort of job you want and what sort of place. If you have no bartending experience, you're not getting hired at a place with a solid cocktail program, for example, but you could get hired as a server or barback and try to get training behind the bar. Clubs are a whole different bag, you will need to look a certain way, sad to say.

Starting off with weekend shifts probably isn't going to happen.

How much do you make in your current 9-5? Maybe try to find full-time work in those after-dark jobs?

I would avoid working a full-time and part time unless you really need the $$$. (BURN OUT)

Excuse me, but since you'e already living here, what's the point of asking how tough it is? If we say it's tough, will you abandon the idea? Just go and try it.

For some it is the fun factor of it, I work as a software engineer but want to do something similar to OP since the crowd at work sucks for me and I can use the change of pace.

IIRC OP was seeking information regarding difficulty in service work as a part-time gig. I live in NYC and have done so all my life, but don't claim to know every single employment market.

Guy (or girl) just asked a simple, sane and rational question. Something in short supply around this forum of late. It doesn't involve "affordable" housing lotteries, which always gets my vote.

I always see signs up for bussers and dishwashers (sometimes they are only in spanish though so you need to keep an eye out and know certain keywords). I need to do something like this, but after a 9-5 day the thought of working nights or on my weekend is a real turn-off, plus I don't want to ruin my chances of future housing lotteries... getting a part time gig like that could do you a ton of damage if you are borderline in certain income bands. I'm just biding my time until it's time to pull the plug and do the big BK, hopefully Chapter 7.

Keep in mind also nearly every bar, club or whatever owner has a short list of "approved" bartenders. That and or knows who to call/where to look and find one if needed. Most are *very* reluctant to hire someone off the street that no one knows.

Besides having the necessary skills owners will be worried about the till. No one wants any surprises at end of night such as things coming up short.

You'd be surprised at how many men and women of all sorts tend bar as a part-time gig. Many started in college or whatever and keep their toes wet after going onto other things. Several people know from back in the day still tend bar now and then to pick-up extra cash.

Other things to keep in mind... if you have a 9-5 m-friday and mention that they are going to think a few things... 1.) you might be trying to do an expose on unfair labor practices in the bar and restaurant industry (abuse in this sector is rampant) 2.) they might think you have a drug and alcohol problem if you need to pad your income with such a job and 3.) they might just flat out reject you if you can't be available except only at night and on weekends. The thought of spending my nights working somewhere with patrons with ooodles of disposable income to blow sounds like it would be the end of me though lol.
