In much of the US, you can get 400-500 dollar per month apartments.
Not possible to find that price in nearby Connecticut or New Jersey.
You have to factor in the salary level in NYC or even nearby places (NJ, CT) is higher than most of the US. The higher salary should cover part of higher cost.
If my parents didn't give me 500$ a month and pay my cell phone bill, I would have to move back in with them pretty quickly, and I am not a big spender and my only large luxury is NOT having roomates
Wish I could get 500 dollars a month right now....
I guess I do okay considering I make as much or less than the salaries people constantly come on here to ask about, wondering if they'll be able to make it.
Depends on what your definition of a "decent life" is.
NYC really isn't that expensive. The rent is outrageous, but that's about it. Everything else you can find for just as cheap as in other places.
Not true. Going out to eat and even catching a movie is more expensive here than most places. I think that's significant for a lot of people. As for daily expenses like grocery bills, I doubt that there's an appreciable difference. It's true though that the rent is the most important factor in what makes NYC so expensive.
Keep in mind, I'm primarily referring to Manhattan, but I think it applies to nice neighborhoods in other boroughs as well.
EDIT: I should also mention simply going out for drinks or buying alcohol is much more expensive here.

I forgot to include gym memberships here as well, which are also easily more expensive here than other cities. Mid City gym being a notable exception.
The subway is dirt cheap, considering. And I can walk to almost everything.
Taxis are for tourists.
