I don't get it, it's disgusting and impolite especially in crowded subway trains and people can't hold on because one person has to hold it all to themselves.
It may be a way to try to get some space and comfort on a crowded train in a psychological level. Like a person hugging a pillow at night....Or they may be new to riding the subway and don't have the balance yet.
Longtime New Yorkers develop "train feet" where its easier to balance after being used to the turbulence. Sameway we can walk through crowds easier then people from towns can. Its conditioning over years.
I think it's worse when people use the pole to lean back against and have their entire bodies up against it, taking up the whole pole. I've seen this **** way too many times on crowded trains. Just put your hand on there anyway. They'll most likely move.
No one wants to be near a pole hogger, and a pole hogger is trying to deter people from standing next to them.
+1 to the New York Pole Hoggers! (Keep it PG, kids.)
