If I had the money, I would go solar, get an electric car, and maybe a tesla battery for emergencies.

Work out how many years it will take to be worth it.

I don't know if/what subsidies are available in NYC/S. But solar isn't generally economically viable without them.

Love the idea.

Okay, maybe it doesn't mean you'll be wealthy from the money you save, but there's something to be said for personal satisfaction and setting a good example.

Beware of fraud.
There are a lot of ads that sound suspiciously like you don't own your panels and are stuck with a contract to BUY the energy generated on your own roof.

I have no idea how reputable these guys may be, but I heard an interesting ad on the radio for Green Hybrid Energy for solar, which said that they minimize upfront costs.

The article warning about scams is interesting, but I note that the article says that they approach the buyer, which puts them on a par with guys that drive up to your house and offer to re-pave your driveway cheaply.

If I owned my own house out in the sticks somewhere, I would be VERY interested in solar and wind.

I was watching the discovery channel the other day and they were at a guy's house in Iowa somewhere who had a small wind turbine set up near his house. It provided so much power that he couldn't use it all and the extra would get fed back onto the grid. The power company sent HIM a check every month for the energy he sent THEM. It was very interesting. His power meter was spinning BACKWARDS!
