Do NYC'ers really make enough money to afford the cost of living? What is the minimum yearly salary someone should make in order to live in an area that's not more than a 60-minute commute from the city?
You've asked a very open-ended question. Perhaps looking at some of the other threads, such as the 'Moving to NYC' threads would help. We can't help you without knowing what you want, what kind of work you do, what kind of housing you're seeking, your budget, etc.
At the risk of over-generalizing, it seems the consensus from other threads is that to live a basic existence in your own apartment in a relatively safe working-class outer-borough neighborhood, $50-$60K is the minimum.
Some areas might pass the 60-minute commute criterion, however.
My husband and I have lived in Manhattan on less than 70k a year. It was tough, but worth it for what we wanted (getting graduate degrees and working in non-profits).
