Buying up the competition is always a good business strategy. Catsimatidis' big money makers are the "Kwik Fill" and "Red Apple" gasoline/convenience stores and travel plazas supplied by his wholly owned United Refining Co. based in Warren, PA.
This would be awful. I've always liked Fairway and they were the closest thing to Whole Foods from NYC, but bungled the ability to really get themselves together and make it work. Meanwhile, Catsimatidis' grocery stores have been almost across the board blegh.
Nothing is certain yet, and these are supposedly "informal" talks, so will have to see how things go.
JC already now owns d'agostino's for the most part after bailing them out last year and saving that hot mess from bankruptcy. This is added to the already long list of NYC supermarkets gobbled up by John Catsimatidis such as Red Apple.
Cleary JC sees the writing on wall for these "old school" NYC supermarkets in face of competition from likes of Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Indeed Amazon getting their mitts on WF is a game changer that likely has Mr. Catsimatidis and other NYC supermarkets worried.
From a business standpoint FW has been a mess for a long time. If someone (him or someone else) doesn't straighten them out, they're likely to go under at some point.
so sick of all the supermarket drama. and with Amazon coming into the picture i'm seriously thinking about going Pro Ana. It will save me money that I can put towards the ridiculous rents in this city.

Fairway was fine until the family got to big for their breeches and went with an IPO seeking to cash in, that is or was the problems started.
That and neither investors or the family foresaw the arrival of Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and the many other places that sell "organic" or whatever groceries.
The Fairway on East 86th still does a good business, this despite the arrival of Whole Foods a block away on Third Avenue. If and or when a Trader Joe's opens in that area all bets will be off however.
On the UWS Trader Joe's is expanding and taking a big chunk of Fairway's market share.
