Hi, yesterday I accepted a position with the FBI in New York City. I am trying to find an apartment that is close to the Federal Plaza. I have no concerns about the school district or anything like that. My concern is a "decent" area, as close as humanly possible to the Plaza without me going bankrupt on the rent every month (I want to keep it decently priced). I'm not a fan of studios, but I understand it is a factor having an actual bedroom.
I have a fairly large savings account, but once again, I want to be able to live. I'm taking a fairly large pay cut already.
Edit: I am not opposed to something furnished for a touch more.
In NYC there is something called the 40x rule for renting. Take your annual salary, divide by 40 and that's approximately the max you can spend for an apartment per month. A lot of landlords follow this rule.
After you provide the dollar amount per month here in this thread, then maybe people can help you out. Otherwise it's impossible to advise without knowing if you're talking about spending $1800/mo or $4000.

That puts you at about $1750 per month. I'm more familiar with rents in Queens but think that given the job location you should be looking in Brooklyn or Jersey city. So I'll leave specific neighborhood recommendations to others. The only place I would recommend in Queens is Astoria near N/W trains but even then the commute would likely be 45 minutes.
There's nothing in your price range in the area you'd be working in, so you need to consider NJ or Queens. You can find something in Brooklyn but if you want an actual bedroom, the commute will be longer. I'm sorry that that's the truth, but the rents in that particular part of the city are astronomical. The good thing is that pretty much most of the subway lines are nearby, so no matter where you look for a place, you should be able to get to work OK.

Probably Long Island City, Queens which is near the R train (which follows a similar route to the N/W in Manhattan) would be a good option as well.

Maybe, but doubtful there is anything for $1750 a month in LIC, unless OP can find something in the older housing stock. Most of LIC at this point is new condos, and I believe prices are starting around $2200 or $2400 even for a studio.
