I’m moving to Manhattan in March and I need a little advice. I have no idea which neighborhood to choose.
I work from home so commuting isn’t a problem, but I’m in my 20s and don’t really want to be surrounded by old rich folks! That being said, I have Asperger’s syndrome and don’t fancy the kind of place where drunk people are throwing up on the sidewalk every night lol. Maybe not the Village, then?!
I was drawn to the UWS because it’s quieter, less of a club district, and close to parks. However, I’ve heard that it’s kind of stuffy and upper class, which really isn’t my jam. I grew up in a poorish neighborhood with absolutely zero pretentiousness, so that breed of entitlement seems a bit over the top for me (if it’s true; I haven’t spent enough time in the UWS to know).
All I do know is that I am willing to compromise because I DO want to live in Manhattan, and because I ride a motorcycle, I’m cool going crosstown if necessary to see friends, etc. All I know is that Harlem is TOO FAR OUT. Lol :-)
Your advice would be much appreciated.
Esme :-)

You need minimum budget of $75,000 to live in Manhattan

Do you have any details on budget or any other sorts of preferences?

Manhattan is expensive, full stop.

What might best fit your criteria are parts Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village and Cooperative Village.

I had to look up Aspergers:

A developmental disorder affecting ability to effectively socialize and communicate.

Why do you want to move to Manhattan, a crowded island with almost 2 million people on it to look for a quiet space to live? Help me to understand.

This is all moot, since there are going to be hardly any landlords in Manhattan who will rent to you with no proof of income and a visa that means you can only legally stay for 3 months.

Perhaps you can find a sublet for a few months.

I happen to really like the Upper West Side, and I don't find it to be stuffy at all, especially near Columbia University, which was later to gentrify than some other UWS locations.

Isn't Columbia in a different neighborhood?

An area like 110th and Broadway is considered Upper West Side and also right near Columbia. I live at 109th and Amsterdam for a little while on the UWS and was surrounded by Columbia students, etc. all the time.

Perhaps I should have phrased my response differently and said the "northernmost part of the Upper West Side" instead of saying Upper West Side near Columbia.
