I'm moving to NYC for my husband's job..he'll be working by Madison square garden. We have two small kids.
We'd like to live with a very short commute/no commute and close to everything..including kids stuff grocery store coffee and restaurants etc. We like to walk everywhere and want to experience all the city has to offer. I'd like to be able to hit the parks and the muesums etc easily. Sounds like Lincoln square doesn't have many kids???

The upper West side sounds like a good fit but I'm not sure which streets to live on..is lower better for access? I'm reading more and more families are loving in midtown West which I assume would be great for my husband getting to work but I don't want to be the rare family.. we'd like a good amount of people in our stage of life.

Nightlife isn't a huge concern. .we are in our late 20's but in the throws of parenting. Budget $4-$5k 2 bedroom with doorman. Thank you!

Wow $4-5k you could get a waterfront view NJ apt with 3 bedroom and maybe 20min commute by ferry or train.

OP

To give you a general idea I put in on streeteasy.com, 2 bedroom, Manhattan and doorman. They had apartment from $3700 and up. Play around with that so you can get an idea of whats out there and then zone in on a neighborhood you may think will work for your family.

If you look at the subway map the easiest from MSG would be to live on the UWS, you have museums and Central Park up there. Location and pricing will depend on availability, how far you want to walk from the subway and how close/proximity to Schools and even Central Park (hot commodity). Groceries/coffee shops/restaurants they're everywhere as well as people and kids. Most people take the trains to get around even if you have to go to some kids birthday party or get together, and yes you can even travel to other boroughs for that...

I'd recommend personally for your needs the UWS or Tribeca. Both are a short train ride for your hubby to work. You will find lots of family's and amenities in those areas.
