Queensbridge Houses(technically L.I.C. but close enough)
Astoria Houses(mainly at night, daytime is fine)
Ravenswood Houses(actually pretty tame, but avoid at night if possible)
Astoria Park(at night only, its crowded in the day)
These are what I can think of, off the top of my head.
Thats about it, Avoid parks at night, and some housing projects, also steer away from some of the desolate industrial areas near the East River at night. Keep away from some of the allies behind houses(mainly at night).
Its not a bad area, it just has its bad spots like a lot of places.
Keep common-sense like you would anywhere.
Anywhere between 21st street and 46th street (west to east) and Ditmars blvd and Broadway (north to south) will be a nice, safe area close to the train, restaurants and other amenities.
There's just nothing much that goes on there... I have friends that live in Astoria and it always just seems super-boring to me.
Even they would rather come to Manhattan..
