Mayor Bill de Blasio announced another major round of repairs for a host of NYCHA buildings across the city. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program has enabled $400 million worth of upgrades on nearly 2,400 apartments across 21 buildings in the NYCHA stock.
These upgrades include improvements to kitchens and bathrooms, windows, elevators, boilers, roofs, and common areas. The renovations will benefit approximately 5,300 residents—they will not have to relocate during the period of renovations.
The first set of renovations are set to begin in 2019, and residents will continue to be charged the same rent once the work is complete and the apartments will remain permanently affordable.
“All New Yorkers deserve to live in safe and decent housing, which is why we’ve been investing in NYCHA since the first day of my Administration to reverse the decades of neglect,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio, in a statement. Monday’s announcement was made at the Lower East Side NYCHA development Campos I, which just finished renovations on 875 apartments through this same model of funding.
The announcement is also the latest positive news for the embattled agency, which had its former chair Shola Olatoye, resign in April amid a series of scandals most notably over heat outages during the winter months, and failure to comply with lead paint inspections. Earlier this month, the city committed $2 billion toward addressing health and safety concerns at NYCHA buildings over the next 10 years.
